Kingswood of Urbana was founded in August 1993. The school was opened to provide an opportunity for young people to enjoy personalized academic training and character instruction. A complete range of high school courses is offered. Classes are held Monday through Friday; there are additional evening and Saturday sessions held throughout the academic year. The primary focus of all instruction is academic excellence and intellectual achievement. A variety of teaching methods are employed, including hands-on experience, debates, mock trials, personal research, field trips, interdisciplinary courses, lab experience, videos, and computer programs. Students are encouraged to prepare for college and are instructed with this as a primary goal.
Kingswood does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin in its admissions and educational policies, or its scholarship programs.
Kingswood is a registered school in the State of Illinois and complies with all state regulations regarding attendance, immunization, physicals, and building safety. In cooperation with Urbana School District 116, Kingswood is able to take advantage of several government funding opportunities including Title II and Title VI.
Kingswood admits students who have the ability and the desire to expand their knowledge and show a willingness to cooperate in the learning process. Seventy percent of the students receive scholarships and financial assistance.
Kingswood is equipped with the most modern and innovative teaching aids including a science lab, a small library, and a computer lab. A T-1 Internet connection, provided, in part, through grants by the Illinois Online Network, allows students to make full use of Internet learning tools. A large outside activity area is provided for sports and physical activity.
Kingswood requires its teachers to hold a Bachelor's or post graduate degree from an acceptable college or university such as the University of Illinois. The staff consists of 6 instructors: 1 holds a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois, 4 hold Master's Degrees from the same institution.
